At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a shepherd boy. His life was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to look after his herd here of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind through the single tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day upon day, guarding his wards inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.

Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.

Tales of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw no wolf.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a couple of more days. But, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
